Blair Mountain in Logan County was the location of a battle in 1921 between thousands coal miners seeking union recognition and armed militia hired by the coal barons. The battle raged for two weeks before federal troops were sent to quell the uprising.
Because of its historic significance to the rise of organized labor, and because it is the location of the largest civil insurrection in the United States since the Civil War, supporters want Blair Mountain to be established as a national monument. Brandon Nida, one of the leaders in the effort, was a guest on TriStateTalk Friday (11/20/2012). |
